Dark Disabled Stories

Dark Disabled Stories is an autobiographical play by Ryan J. Haddad that was produced by The Bushwick Starr and presented at The Public Theater in 2023. The show probes illicit ableism through a series of audacious and unforgiving vignettes about the strangers Ryan encounters while navigating a city not built for his walker and cerebral palsy. Aimed at radical accessibility, every performance incorporated Open Captions, American Sign Language, and Audio Description seamlessly into the design. As the projection designer, Kameron designed a kinetic typographic system using the typeface Atkinson Hyperlegible to caption the show in real time. The captions not only provided access but also functioned as a character unto itself by infusing the play with meaning and humor. The New York Times described it as “a highly theatrical, gracefully layered model of inventive inclusivity.” Kameron received Lucille Lortel and Henry Hewes Design awards for his work on the production.
